This could be the most important thing you do this year . . .
If you are anything like me, you have a ton of hopes and dreams for the new year.
There are changes that you want to make happen.
Whether it is with your career, your friendships, your family or some other area of your life. These are things that matter to you.
But, how do you make sure that you accomplish those goals? How do you keep the important stuff from getting lost in the shuffle of life?
Keep reading because I have an idea for you.
I love the idea of New Year’s Resolutions, but like most people they are usually a massive failure. In fact, I can show you detailed documents from years past where I chronicled the specific improvements I was going to make in every area of my life.
Yeah, I can be a little obsessive. 😃
But, despite my best planning, in reviewing those goals I always felt discouraged. I ended up thinking I was too ambitious and somehow not committed enough. Oh man, not again.
However, the last 5 years I have tried something different that works much better.
You may have heard of this practice before. Basically, the idea is to choose 1-3 words to represent your goals or intentions for the year. It involves setting your mindset instead of focusing on specific, detailed goals (although specific goals are still helpful!).
You can easily revisit these words over the course of the year and refocus yourself on what matters the most.
Do you want to be a better parent in 2018?
I know I do. I want to spend more quality time with my family. I want to be careful to not let that tricky work/life balance get out of whack.
I want to focus on improving my relationship with my youngest daughter. She often pushes my buttons and she would tell you that I push her button too! I say and do things that make things hard for both of us. No fun at all.
I’m pretty sure that patience will be one of my words. 🙂
There are some other changes I want to make, but you get the idea.
How about you? What would you like to be different this year?
Imagine looking back on 2018 and being able to think to yourself, “Wow, I had some ups and downs, but I really grew as a parent. I was able to really keep my focus on the things that mattered the most.”
Wouldn’t that be awesome?
Setting your intentions can be a powerful practice. You can do it anytime, anywhere and it can make a real difference for you.
You can start by figuring out your answer to this one question.
What is one word you would choose that would remind you of the parent you want to be in 2018?
Here’s to your parenting success in the coming year!
PS. Of course you can choose more than one word. Maybe a phrase or a quote. Whatever works for you.
